Clyde Autio enlisted in the Air Force in 1953, but left service in 1963 to serve as a civilian with the Foreign Technology Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He joined the Air Force Reserve in 1973. He retired as a U.S. Air Force Major General.

The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Captain Autio, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
