The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Arthur J. Tiesling (MCSN: 558242), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tank Crewman of Company C, Fifth Tank Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 20 February 1945. When his tank was disabled and its radio equipment rendered useless after the vehicle had struck an enemy land mine, Private First Class Teiesling manned his bow machine gun for over two hours, destroying two squads of Japanese soldiers and twice repairing stoppages. Voluntarily leaving the safety of his tank to go for aid he traversed fifty yards under enemy fire to a chain of abandoned trenches and back to our lines. Contacting another tank he informed the crew of his tanks position and returned to his disabled vehicle under intense machine gun fire. By his courageous action he enabled the remaining members of his crew to make their way back to our lines under the covering fire of the second tank. His initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
