Lloyd “Fig” Newton was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1966 upon graduation from Tennessee State University. He flew 269 combat missions during the Vietnam War, earning two Distinguished Flying Crosses and other awards. He retired in 2000 as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
