Billy Minter served in the Army Air Forces in World War II, but left the service after the war to return to the University of Oklahoma. He subsequently returned to active duty with the U.S. Air Force in 1949 as an aviation cadet, receiving his commission and wings. He retired in 1984 as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
