Merrill McPeak was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1957 after graduating from San Diego State College. From 1966 to 1968 he flew with the Air Force “Thunderbirds” Demonstration Team. As an F-4 pilot in Vietnam, he earned the Silver Star and two Distinguished Flying Crosses. From 1990 to 1994 he served as the 14th Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and retired in 1994 as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
