Born in Slovenia (formerly Yugoslavia), Frank Gorenc emigrated to the United States with his family in 1962. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Class of 1979. In 2013 he was appointed a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General and retired in 2016 at that rank. His older brother Stanley Gorenc graduated for the Air Force Academy with the Class of 1975 and retired in 2016 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.

    U.S. Air Force Academy Register of Graduates

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Captain Frank Gorenc, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life on Magruder Boulevard, Hampton, Virginia, on 1 July 1989. On that date, Captain Gorenc witnessed a multicar high speed accident at night. While others stood in shock and fear, Captain Gorenc immediately pulled over and took charge of the rescue effort. He directed calls for emergency response, and despite an engine fire and leaking motor fuel, removed two severely injured victims before their vehicle was totally engulfed in flames. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Captain Gorenc has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
