David Goldfein graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Class of 1983. As a pilot, he flew combat missions in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Allied Force and Enduring Freedom, earning two Distinguished Flying Crosses with Combat “V”. From 2015 to 2016 he served as the 38th Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and in July 2016 was appointed the 21st Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and he retired in 2020 as a U.S. Air Force r-Star General.
