(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Captain Michael D. Thomas, United States Air Force, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy as an F-105 Thunderchief Pilot and Flight Leader during a mission over North Vietnam. During the attack, Captain Thomas’ F-105 was hit, causing a temporary fire aboard the aircraft and major structural damage. Even though he lost the use of vital flight controls, Captain Thomas continued in his crippled aircraft to press the attack. With his mission completed, he flew the severely damaged fighter to a friendly emergency field. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States United States Air Force.
