(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to First Lieutenant Robert Couth Mathis (AFSN: 17787A), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane with the 51st Fighter-Interceptor Group, FIFTH Air Force, in aerial operations in Korea, on the night of 26 November 1950. While serving as a volunteer in a ground assignment as a Forward Air Controller with the South Korean army, his forward position was overrun by members of the Chinese army. First Lieutenant Mathis was shot and slightly wounded but evaded capture by escaping on a retreating American tank. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Mathis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
