John Gordon graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1931. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He retired in 1949 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel (Air Corps) John Clarence Gordon, United States Army Air Forces, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services as Assistant Chief of Staff, Personnel, Air Service Command, during the period of March 1941 to December 1943. By his unusual foresight, initiative and untiring efforts, he anticipated the format of an organization to provide for the annual growth of the Air Service Command. The personnel structure for civilian and military personnel now in operation is based upon the basic development of Colonel Gordon’s program. His diligence and unusual application constituted an outstanding example of devotion to duty which has reflected great credit upon him and the Air Service Command.
