During World War II, Jack Mankin became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. After the war he transferred to the new U.S. Air Force, and served in the 8th Fighter-Bomber Group in Japan when the Korean War broke out. He retired from the Air Force in 1952.
