The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Gilbert I. Thies (MCSN: 524576), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of a Wire Team serving with the Fourteenth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan Island, Mariana Islands on 15 June 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific fire from Japanese guns, Private First Class Thies rendered valiant service during initial landing operations on Saipan Island. Under intense enemy artillery and mortar fire he assisted his wire team in finding and repairing a break in the telephone lines used for sending fire commands between artillery regimental headquarters and one of the battalions. Before returning to the unit the team was caught in an enemy artillery concentration and Private First Class Thies was killed. His heroic spirit and outstanding technical skill contributed materially to the success of this vital campaign and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
