The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant John B. Broadway, United States Air Force, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as navigator of a B-26 attack bomber over enemy territory in Korea on 26 June 1951. While on the bomb run, his aircraft received six direct hits from enemy automatic weapons. The first hit burst in the nose section; Lieutenant Broadway was injured and knocked back into the passageway. Despite his injuries, he went back to the nose and completed the bomb drop on the enemy airfield at Sariwon with excellent results. Lieutenant Broadway then climbed back to the cockpit, held his flashlight on the instrument panel for the pilot, and directed the damaged aircraft through flak-free corridors back to friendly territory where a successful crash landing was made. The courage and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Broadway reflected the highest credit upon himself, the Far East Air Forces, and the United States Air Force.
