The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Warrant Officer 3 (WO-3) Jason A. Hope, United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed enemy on 22 March 2005, while serving as Assistant Detachment Commander for Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha 733 (SFOD-A 733) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Chief Warrant Officer Three Hope’s professionalism and courage under intense enemy fire were essential to the successful execution of a joint mission between OGA and SFOD-A 733 that resulted in the death of senior Taliban Commander Raz Mohammad. The success of this mission will significantly degrade the ability of the Taliban to coordinate anti-coalition and anti-government attacks throughout Afghanistan. Throughout this courageous operation, Chief Warrant Officer Three Hope’s contributions to mission success cannot be overstated. Chief Warrant Officer Three Hope was an assault element leader for the combined ODA and OGA assault element. This element came under intense enemy fire while moving up a ridgeline towards the enemy position. Under intense enemy fire, Chief Warrant Officer Three Hope stood up and personally led the ODA attack across over 400 meters of open desert in order to flank the enemy position. Despite a heavy barrage of enemy fire impacting within inches of him as he ran towards the enemy position, Chief Warrant Officer Three Hope continued to personally lead the attack. His calm command presence under fire and courageous actions inspired the ODA to aggressively maneuver against the enemy position. His heroic actions were also an inspiration to the OGA CEU, one of the most battle-hardened Afghan combat units in theater, and rallied their actions after the CEU Commander was killed during the firefight. During the final assault across 200 meters of open terrain, Chief Warrant Officer Three Hope again completely exposed himself to accurate and intense enemy AK-47 and RPG fire in order inspire and lead the final assault. Without regard to his own safety, Chief Warrant Officer Three Hope continued to expertly control the assault element while at the same time engaging the enemy with his M-4 rifle. During the final assault of the enemy position, Chief Warrant Officer Three Hope courageously cleared an enemy position from where the ODA had received heavy AK-47 and RPG fire. The enemy also had a PKM machine gun and 400 rounds of ammunition at this position with which he could have inflicted heavy casualties on the ODA had Chief Warrant Officer Three Hope not acted so decisively. Chief Warrant Officer Three Hope’s heroic actions allowed ODA 733 to assault across 600 meters of open desert under intense enemy fire and rout the enemy position from the flank. Without Chief Warrant Officer Three Hope’s exceptional bravery and leadership throughout this daring operation, Raz Mohammad would be at large today and Afghan and Coalition forces would likely have paid a heavy price in human lives. Chief Warrant Officer Three Hope’s numerous valorous and heroic actions are directly responsible for the successful mission that resulted in the death of Senior Taliban Commander Raz Mohammed. His gallantry in action and exceptional leadership were in keeping with the highest military and traditions and values. His distinctive accomplishments reflect great credit upon himself, the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan, the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), the United States Army and the Department of Defense.
