Evan Johnson served as an Infantryman in the U.S. Army and later in the Pennsylvania National Guard from 1937 to 1940, before entering pilot training in 1942. During World War II he became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. He left the service after the war, but returned to serve in the U.S. Air Force briefly, from 1947 to 1950.
