The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Harry Troy Hanna (ASN: 0-737778), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning of the 37th Fighter Squadron, 14th Fighter Group, FIFTEENTH Air Force, in the Mediterranean Theater of Action during World War II. During a convoy patrol mission, Lieutenant Hanna’s squadron of 7 planes sighted a formation of more than twenty-five JU-87 Stukas preparing to attack the convoy. In the fifteen minute flight which ensued, Lieutenant Hanna destroyed five Stukas, damaged a 6th, and twice saved his comrades from attacks from the rear. His alertness and his skilled marksmanship were important factors in his squadron’s unusual achievement in breaking up the hostile formation and destroying 17 enemy aircraft without loss. His outstanding courage and ability as a combat pilot reflect highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
