During the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, William Haney was able to get airborne and flew two sorties before his fighter airplane was shot up by friendly anti-aircraft fire. During World War II, he became an ACE, credited with shooting down 5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. After the war he transferred to the new U.S. Air Force, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
