During World War II, Leroy Grosshuesch became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 8 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. After the war he transferred to the new U.S. Air Force, returning to combat aviation in the Vietnam War, before retiring in 1973 as a Colonel.
