During World War II, William Fiedler became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. He was the USAAF’s ONLY P-39 ACE. On June 30, 1943, while Fiedler was preparing to take off for a combat mission, a P-38 on take-off, crashed head-on into him, mortally wounding him.
