During World War II, Ray Crawford became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 6 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. He left service after the war and gained fame as an automobile race driver, placing first in the 1954 Pan Am Road Race, and driving in the Indianapolis 500 in 1955 and 1956. Serious injuries received during a crash at the 1959 Indianapolis 500 curtailed Crawford’s driving career.
