The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Frank F. Tassone (MCSN: 339967), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity I action while serving with the Second Marine Raider Battalion during operations against enemy Japanese forces at Mambula, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on December 3, 1942. When the advance of his company was held up by a Japanese machine gun, Private First Class Tassone, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, volunteered to silence it. Skillfully and courageously working his way through the treacherous jungle, he reached a position from which he could neutralize the enemy weapon. In the face of accurate and severe enemy fire and with grim determination, he swiftly completed his hazardous mission. By his heroic conduct and indomitable fighting spirit he was an inspiration to his comrades and contributed in saving many lives which otherwise might have been lost.
