The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Jack G. Tapscott (MCSN: 303627), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Platoon Sergeant in a Rifle Platoon of Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against the enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Marianas, Islands on 25 July 1944. Assuming command after his Platoon Leader was wounded while directing the stringing of tactical wire in front of the positions, Platoon Sergeant Tapscott immediately ordered the wire party to their positions and directed fire against the enemy. Then, running fifty yards to an exposed position in front of the lines, he carried his wounded Platoon Leader back to the comparative safety of the lines. During a strong hostile counterattack that night, Platoon Sergeant Tapscott continually moved among his men to distribute ammunition land direct the fire of his unit, thereby contributing materially to repulsing Japanese forces who had been threatening the entire beachhead line. His courage, initiative and unwavering devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
