The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Joseph L. Tamborini (MCSN: 859844), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Team Leader of Company E, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 29 November 1950. With his company under attack by a numerically superior hostile force, Corporal Tamborini fearlessly braved enemy small arms, machine gun, grenade and mortar fire to direct and control the effective fire of his team. Observing hostile forces overrunning a machine gun position on his right flank, he immediately adjusted his team’s fire and successfully annihilated the enemy who had penetrated the position. Although suffering from head and leg wounds sustained during the initial stages of the action, he courageously remained at his post, repeatedly refusing to be evacuated until he was assured that the hostile attack had been repulsed. His gallant leadership, courage and staunch devotion to duty reflect great credit upon Corporal Tamborini and the United States Naval Service.
