The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Walter J. Suskey, Jr. (MCSN: 360324), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Team Leader of Company A, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 17 September 1944. While leading his fire team in support of a tank against strongly defended enemy pillboxes, Corporal Suskey was severely wounded. Although weak from loss of blood, he gallantly continued to direct the fire of the tank and his men against the enemy positions until he collapsed and was evacuated to the Battalion Aid Station. By his indomitable fighting spirit and valiant action, he contributed greatly to the annihilation of a determined enemy, and his devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
