The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Field Cook Robert A. Suchy (MCSN: 890075), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 10 May 1945. Volunteering to lead two stretcher teams into a valley where men from his unit were retarded by heavy enemy mortar and machine-gun fire, Field Cook Suchy and the stretcher-bearers had picked up two wounded men and started working their way back to the battalion aid station when a hostile machine gun opened fire, wounding one of the stretcher-bearers. Realizing the need for concealment, Field Cook Suchy immediately threw two white phosphorous grenades, concealing the area while he courageously led the men to safety. Promptly returning to the exposed valley after completing this heroic mission, he risked his own life on three additional trips to assist in treatment and evacuation of wounded Marines. His initiative and courage under enemy fire were instrumental in saving the lives of five comrades, and his loyal devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
