The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Sherman D. Stube (MCSN: 303662), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 17 June 1944. With three members of his squad severely wounded and lying in an exposed area one hundred yards in advance of his position, Sergeant Stube unhesitatingly risked his life to attempt a rescue and, advancing across the open expanse through withering enemy small arms and automatic fire, expeditiously evacuated the helpless man to a safe area and obtained medical assistance for them. By his fearless initiative, his outstanding fortitude and cool and courageous action in the face of grave danger, Sergeant Strube served as an inspiration to his men throughout this and subsequent perilous engagements, and his untiring devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
