The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Jack N. Strunk (MCSN: 343352), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while a member of the First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, September 14-15, 1942. Volunteering to guide an ammunition truck through intense enemy fire, Private Strunk arrived at a very critical time when the hard pressed battalion on the front line had virtually expended the ammunition supply. His keen foresight and valor were largely instrumental in enabling the defending troops to repel the Japanese attacks.
