The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Roscoe C. Strong (MCSN: 505861), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifle Squad Leader of Company G, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 13 May 1945. Attacked from the rear by an enemy soldier with a rifle and fixed bayonet after leading his squad through intense hostile machine-gun and mortar fire in an assault on a strongly-defended enemy position near the village of Dakeshi, Corporal Strong realized that to fire upon the hostile attacker would endanger friendly troops to his rear and, engaging the enemy in hand to hand combat, disarmed and killed him. By his courageous leadership, Corporal Strong contributed materially to the success of the assault, and his devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
