The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Percy L. Stott (MCSN: 415068), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Intelligence Section of the Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 22 April 1945. Undaunted by the hazards involved, Sergeant Stott volunteered for an intelligence patrol which was to operate in an area infested with dangerous enemy sniper banks. When the officer in command was killed and the patrol scattered during a sudden ambush while returning to friendly lines after successfully accomplishing its mission of locating the bivouac area of a particularly troublesome enemy force, Sergeant Stott immediately assumed command and skillfully directed the re-grouping of the patrol. After leading the patrol over the hazardous route to make contact with friendly forces, he guided an attack group over the same route to locate and destroy the enemy force and, returning to his patrol, assisted in the evacuation of two wounded men over a dangerous route to the rear. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
