The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lyle E. Stoops (MCSN: 837764), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Eighth 155-mm. Gun Battalion, Third Corps Artillery, Third Amphibious Corps, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, from 30 September to 2 October 1944. When a hospital corpsman was wounded in an attempt to reach an officer needing immediate help, Private First Class Stoops ran to the wounded man and in the face of hostile fire, dragged him to the comparative safety of a machine-gun emplacement and rendered first aid, after which the corpsman returned to treat the wounded officer. Private First Class Stoop’s courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
