The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Marvin O. Stinson (MCSN: 260445), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Platoon Sergeant of Company E, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 21 June 1945. Assuming command of a platoon which was becoming disorganized due to the loss of the Platoon Leader and severe casualties sustained from intense enemy mortar, machine-gun and rifle fire, Platoon Sergeant Stinson quickly reorganized the platoon while exposed to the hostile fire and led a renewed attack which resulted in the capture of the objective. Advancing alone ahead of the position, he then destroyed an enemy machine gun and crew which had been inflicting heavy casualties on his unit. His courageous leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
