The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Dale V. Stinson (MCSN: 349072), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of Weapons Company, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands, on the night of 31 July and the morning of 1 August 1944. Although four members of his crew were wounded and evacuated to the rear, Corporal Stinson skillfully reorganized his squad and efficiently continued the operation of his 37-mm. gun. Suffering a serious wound during a hostile attack, he steadfastly refused evacuation and, realizing that his weapon’s continuous operation was vital to the defense of the dangerous terrain, remained active at his gun station, thereby contributing materially to the successful repulse of this strong counterattack. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
