The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Gordon C. Still (MCSN: 250688), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Marine Parachute Regiment during action against enemy Japanese forces on Bougainville, Solomon Islands, December 9, 1943. Leading his squad around the enemy’s left flank until halted by heavy fire, Corporal Still, despite continuous shelling, crossed the lanes of two light machine guns and destroyed their crews and emplacements. While returning to his own unit, he discovered two wounded squad members and, while dragging them to safety through a hail of bullets, was shot through the leg. Despite this painful injury, however, he refused evacuation and medical attention until he had contacted his platoon leader and had given him an accurate account of the situation. His bold determination and cool courage in the face of grave personal danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
