The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Challis L. Still (MCSN: 505235), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Light Machine Gun Operator of Company B, First Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Bougainville, Solomon Islands, 7 November 1943. Accompanying with his machine gun crew a night combat patrol operating behind enemy lines, Private First Class Still aided in establishing an ambush on a trail used by the Japanese for moving reinforcements and supplies to the front. Ordered to fire when a column of hostile troops approached, he held his fire until the head of the column was a few feet from the muzzle of his gun and, opening fire, killed a large number of the enemy. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Still and the United States Naval Service.
