Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 475 (February 22, 1945)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Orville H. Stevens (MCSN: 337824), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Saipan in the Marianas, on 2 July 1944. Wounded by a hostile grenade while attacking a strategic enemy position, Corporal Stevens steadfastly refused to be evacuated and continued to lead his team’s operations in the furious assault until his platoon was pinned down by an overwhelming concentration of Japanese machine-gun fire. Fearlessly disregarding all personal danger, he boldly stationed himself in front of his unit and, locating concealed enemy gun emplacements, skillfully directed a continuous barrage of heavy tank fire against the hostile positions until instantly killed by a savage burst from an enemy gun. By his indomitable fighting spirit, resolute initiative and daring tactics, Corporal Stevens destroyed several Japanese pillboxes and contributed materially to the success of our operations in this vital area, and his great personal courage and valiant conduct in the face of terrific odds upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
