The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Private First Class John A. Steel (MCSN: 636163), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with the FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea by firing on the enemy from an exposed position in order to prevent the evacuation of an enemy ammunition truck in September 1950. Private First Class Steel fearlessly continued firing. This display of gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and the Naval Service of the United States.
