The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Roy Star (MCSN: 395114), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 15 to 23 June 1944. Refusing evacuation for a wound incurred during the initial assault, Corporal Star assumed command of his squad when its leader became a casualty and successfully attacked numerous enemy-held positions, aiding materially in clearing his company’s sector of the beach until he was evacuated under orders. Returning to duty on the recently captured Mt. Tipo Pale, Corporal Star took command of a unit subjected to numerous night attacks in which he was exposed to fierce grenade fire hurled by the concealed enemy. Blown from his hole and severely wounded by a direct hit, he valiantly returned to his position, tirelessly reorganizing other wounded men in the area and holding the line until he fell, mortally wounded by another strike. His heroic courage, indomitable spirit and unflinching devotion to duty throughout at the risk of his own life reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Star and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
