The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Paul H. Stansberry (MCSN: 847070), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Squad Leader of a Rifle Company, serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 13 March 1945. With the advance of his platoon halted by hostile fire from two bunkers, Corporal Stansberry volunteered to advance alone for a distance of one hundred yards through terrific enemy rifle and machine-gun fire to destroy the opposition and, carrying his own explosives as he unhesitatingly crawled ahead of the lines, succeeded in destroying his first bunker with a demolition charge. Boldly continuing his self-assigned mission, he had reached the second bunker when he was mortally wounded by enemy fire. On reducing the volume of opposing Japanese fire by his destruction of one bunker, Corporal Stansberry had enabled his platoon to move forward and, his dauntless spirit and great personal valor in the fulfillment of a hazardous mission were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
