The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Platoon Sergeant Russell J. Stanley (MCSN: 304359), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan Island, Mariana Islands, 17 June 1944. When his platoon was ordered to a new position to consolidate the front lines of the beachhead, Platoon Sergeant Stanley fearlessly led his men through an area of thick undergrowth and rough, rocky terrain where they were pinned down by heavy enemy machine-gun and rifle fire. Completely disregarding his own safety, he boldly advanced toward the machine gun, deliberately exposing himself to draw its fire and thereby enabling his platoon to flank its position and destroy the gun. By his self-sacrificing spirit and unwavering devotion to duty, he had contributed materially to the ultimate success of this vital mission before he was mortally wounded during this action. His courageous initiative and heroic fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
