The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Alfred J. St. Laurent (MCSN: 298994), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, Fifth Pioneer Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 18 March 1945. When heavy enemy fire pinned down his attacking group and supporting tanks fired in the wrong direction, thereby endangering friendly forces, Private First Class St. Laurent courageously left his covered position and ran to the tank of the platoon leader. After attracting the tank platoon leader’s attention, he oriented the tanks and directed their fire on the enemy strong point holding up the advance of his group. His fearless initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
