The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class John W. Spatz (MCSN: 455328), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 20 June 1944. When an explosion occurred in an ammunition dump starting serious fires in the vicinity, Private First Class Spatz unhesitatingly entered the blazing area where large quantities of dynamite, artillery and mortar ammunition were stored in a valiant attempt to isolate the raging flames. Working tirelessly despite the grave danger, he fearlessly continued his courageous efforts until mortally wounded by a second sudden detonation. His daring initiative, resolute determination and unwavering devotion to the completion of an extremely perilous mission reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Spatz and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
