The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Charles A. Sooter (MCSN: 375367), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Runner of Company C, Second Tank Battalion, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, from 20 to 23 November 1943. With radio facilities inoperative during this period of bitter offensive action, Platoon Sergeant Sooter repeatedly risked his life to carry vital messages between the Tank Battalion Command Post, tanks in the field and infantry front line positions, completing each perilous assignment expeditiously and with extreme courage despite the enemy’s incessant shellfire. By his daring aggressiveness, outstanding fortitude and unwavering determination in the face of grave danger, Platoon Sergeant Sooter contributed immeasurably to the maintenance of communications of tank units throughout the fierce hostilities and to the eventual success of the campaign. His zealous devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
