The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Jacob Solomon (MCSN: 351080), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as member of a Combat Patrol serving with the Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the battle of Piva Forks, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on November 22, 1943. Withdrawing with his patrol after conducting a successful reconnaissance of a heavily fortified Japanese position, Private First Class Solomon observed four wounded comrades lying within a few yards of the hostile emplacements and, gallantly braving an intense barrage of close range, Japanese rifle fire, made four separate trips into the dangerous area to evacuate the helpless men. Private First Class Solomon’s daring initiative, unflinching courage and selfless efforts in voluntarily risking his life for others despite extreme peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
