The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lester R. Snyder (MCSN: 322216), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while a member of Company F, Second battalion, Second Marines, Reinforced, during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands on 11 November 1942. While acting as a platoon runner, Private First Class Snyder, along with a corpsman, worked his way through the grass in the face of hostile machine-gun fire and brought out a seriously injured comrade who otherwise might not have received first aid treatment. Reporting to his platoon command post, then calling for a stretcher, he made sure the wounded man was under proper care before he returned to duty. His heroic conduct, maintained at great risk in the face of grave danger, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
