The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Donald M. Snell (MCSN: 336310), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, from 20 to 24 November 1943. With all of the officers and a number of men in his platoon killed or wounded during the fierce hostilities on D-Day, Corporal Snell Corporal Snell immediately assumed command and effected a prompt reorganization and, despite a shrapnel wound in his leg received during the bitter action, boldly led his men in sustained attacks against a fanatic enemy. Continuing his same daring tactics, he skillfully directed the activities of his men throughout the entire operation against this heavily fortified stronghold. Thereby contributing materially to the success of our forces in overcoming all Japanese resistance in this vital war area. His forceful and determined leadership, valiant fighting spirit and cool courage in the face of grave danger served as an inspiration to others in the vicinity and reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Snell and the United States Naval Service.
