The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Zeb C. Smith (MCSN: 315046), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters Company, Third Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, 20 November 1943. Repeatedly exposing himself to intense enemy machine-gun, mortar and sniper fire, Private First Class Smith succeeded in rescuing six men from drowning. By his courage, dauntless determination and concern for the safety of others, he upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
