The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Malcom N. Smith (MCSN: 0-18227), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to Reconnaissance Company Headquarters Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 21 June 1944. Riding unprotected on the top of a tank through withering hostile fire to a shell hole forward of our lines where his commanding officer lay seriously wounded, First Lieutenant Smith bravely assisted in placing the stricken man on the vehicle and then shielded him with his own body on the return trip. His daring initiative, great personal valor and concern for another reflect the highest credit upon First Lieutenant Smith and the United States Naval Service.
