The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Alfred Skowronek (MCSN: 0-9201), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Adjutant of the Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 7 July 1944. Informed that the Battalion’s position was overrun by the enemy, First Lieutenant Skowronek assembled personnel of the rear echelon and, equipping them with all available weapons and ammunition, led them forward to aid in defending the position. Skillfully directing his men, he brought them through a confused, fire-swept battle area and successfully contacted and assisted his Battalion. His courage, leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
