The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Frederick C. Sisk (MCSN: 812184), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Squad Leader, serving with Company E, Third Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against the enemy on Japanese-held Iwo Jima, Volcano islands, on 7 March, 1945. Attacking through a heavily defended rocky draw when his unit came under vicious fire from a large enemy-held cave, Private First Class Sisk swiftly and skillfully deployed his squad to engage the Japanese. After directing his unit’s fire to drive the defenders inside, he advanced to the entrance and hurled grenades into the cave, causing numerous casualties and forcing the survivors to seek escape through a concealed rear entrance. Observing this flight through the cave, he hurled well-timed grenades at the fleeing enemy, thereby accounting for at least twenty Japanese dead. By his valiant conduct, alert leadership and indomitable fighting spirit throughout the bitter close-quarter struggle against numerically superior forces, Private First Class Sisk constantly inspired his men and upheld the highest traditions of the United State Naval Service.
