The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Robert M. Simpson (MCSN: 0-10355), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company G. Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the battle of Piva Forks on Bougainville, Solomon Islands, 24 November 1943. When his company became disorganized and suffered heavy casualties from an intense enemy bombardment during an advance to the Piva River, Captain Simpson personally moved through his company area and, in the face of heavy rifle and machine-gun fire, reorganized his men and led them forward in attack until they had annihilated the Japanese force. By his courage and indomitable fighting spirit, he contributed materially to the success of his Regiment in this engagement. His leadership throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
